Supervising Friday afternoon detention wasn’t the favourite job among the staff of De Vere High School, most of them wanting to get home early and kick up their heels for the weekend.
The same could be said of the recalcitrant students who were similarly incarcerated and John, newly qualified and in his probationary teaching year, wasn’t looking forward to the next hour. He’d been momentarily relieved when he saw there was just one name on the detention list for that afternoon, but his heart sank when he saw whose it was.
